Join the NRN Committee!
Are you an early career researcher? Do you like talking shop and socialising with other like-minded people as well as delving into the depths of your research subject? Do you like organising exciting and memorable events? Read on…
The New Researchers’ Network of the STR is a supportive group of postgraduate students, practitioners, and early career academics with interests relating to theatre and performance research. The NRN Committee organise a cale...ndar of events each year: we hold a research-focused symposium every summer, and a workshop/training session (in publishing, teaching, public engagement, career possibilities, etc.) in winter or spring. Past events have included study days, lectures, theatre/archive tours, and social dinners. This calendar of events is designed to encourage members to share knowledge and ideas, to provoke discussions and debate, and to develop a network of helpful and supportive contacts.
The NRN Committee is looking to recruit several new members in the coming months. This opportunity would provide valuable experience in organising events, managing social media accounts, and/or running a blog.
If you would be interested in applying to join the NRN Committee, please email a brief expression of interest to nrn@str.org.uk by Friday 5th April. If you would like to know more about this opportunity before submitting an expression of interest, please contact Ella Hawkins and Rachael Nicholas at nrn@str.org.uk.

STR Annual Lecture Series 2018-2019
The Frankenstein Phenomenon
A rehearsed reading of “Presumption, or the Fate of Frankenstein”, by Richard Brinsley Peake
... Mary Shelley’s novel Frankenstein was published in 1818. The popularity of the novel was greatly increased when in 1823 the first stage version appeared, “Presumption, or the Fate of Frankenstein”, by Richard Brinsley Peake. The lavish Lyceum production was crammed with spectacular effects. Two centuries on there have been countless other stage and film productions. On March 7th 2019 as part of the STR’s 70th anniversary year we shall be celebrating the extraordinary continuing Frankenstein phenomenon with a rehearsed reading of Peake’s original adaptation. Although originally billed as a “melo-dramatic opera”, on this occasion time will not allow the inclusion of the music, but we will have the original stage directions. Appropriately, 2019 is also the 50th anniversary of the death of one of the most celebrated interpreters of the role of the monster, Boris Karloff.
Directed by Sue Solomon Chaired by Eileen Cottis Introductory talk by Simon Sladen
The Society for Theatre Research Annual Lecture Series is free and open to all. Refreshments will be served following each lecture. Programming is subject to change. To find more information on our Annual Lecture Series, as well as our other events, check our website: www.str.org.uk Lectures are livestreamed on our YouTube channel. On the day of the lecture a live link will be Tweeted from our accounts: The Society for Theatre Research: @TheSTR STR New Researchers’ Network: @nrn_str
